The main point of each exercise in the beginning is to use your whole body to power the strike, not just your shoulder and arms. The force begins in the legs and should flow up like a wave through the hips and abdomen. For upward and horizontal strikes, the main force comes from twisting. For downward strikes, drop your body weight into the strike.
